Biscuit Head
I’m a sucker for a great breakfast spot. When I was researching where to eat in Asheville, I kept stumbling across this place called Biscuit Head. It looked super low-key — nothing fancy. A few locations have super small interiors and a menu that, as the name suggests, focuses on biscuits.
Multiple locations for the win
We went to the location on Biltmore Ave. I’m VERY thankful they have multiple locations because this place was packed! There was a huge line. I can only imagine how it would’ve been with only one location. Thankfully, most people were there for takeout orders, given the dining room was closed (COVID), and there was limited seating outside.
The biscuit rundown
Here’s what we ordered:
Biscuit French Toast: Blueberry syrup, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. PHENOMENAL. Crunchy yet soft. Flavorful and not oily. The sweet jam was totally YUM.
Fried Green Tomato Biscuit: An open-faced biscuit with fried green tomato, brie, tomato, two poached eggs, and smoked tomato hollandaise. The egg was cooked perfectly — firm whites with a runny yolk. The tomato was firm with a crunchy, fried coating. The hollandaise added a nice tartness.
Biscuit Donuts: Tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with lemon curd. The donuts were crunchy on the outside yet soft and pillowy on the inside. The lemon curd was delicious too. It was mild and not too sweet, not too tart.
Filthy Animal: Fried chicken biscuit sandwich with pimento cheese, bacon, scrambled eggs, and house gravy. I was expecting this to be my favorite, but it was actually my least favorite. There was a bit too much pimento cheese, which overwhelmed the other flavors.
Mimosa Fried Chicken Biscuit: Biscuit with mimosa fried chicken, sweet potato butter, sriracha slaw, and a poached egg. This biscuit was good but felt a bit lackluster in terms of flavor — it was missing something. Well, the answer to what it was missing was spice. I added the Sweet Heat Hot Sauce, which made it perfection (and it ended up being my favorite!).
More than just food
Biscuit head also sells merch, a cookbook, homemade jams, and hot sauces — if you want to bring something home. I picked up a copy of the cookbook because the food really was great. I also went back and ordered a bottle of the Sweet Heat Hot Sauce after trying it on the biscuit — it’s a wonderful blend of sticky, sweet, and hot (like sweet chili sauce). I highly recommend picking up a bottle — or five.
All in, I give Biscuit Head an 8/10. The value is good, and the food is excellent. It’s a super low-key spot, which always makes the perfect breakfast, in my opinion. With that said, it’s definitely more of a takeout spot than a place to dine out — you have to stalk people for a table. If you’re not into that, it’ll taste just as good in the car.
