Superica

TexMex for breakfast? In Charlotte? I thought when I looked up Superica after being told repeatedly that this place has one of the best brunches in Charlotte. Though I was a bit skeptical, after I saw the photos of the food online, I knew I had to try it and decide it this place was legit for myself.

No wait? No way!

Spur of the moment on a Saturday (the day before Father’s Day), a few friends and I decided that it was the perfect day to give Superica a try. When we arrived at 11:45 am, we were shocked to find that there was no wait. Usually, this is a red flag for me. But we decided to venture in — and I’m so glad we did. Brunch is served from 10 am – 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays in addition to their regular menu. They serve alcoholic drinks, massive portions, and everything is reasonably priced.

A whole lot of YUM

Not surprisingly, we ordered WAAAAAY too much food. Thank goodness TexMex makes yummy leftovers.

The meal starts with chips and house-made salsa. There are two salsas — one is avocado-based, and the other is roasted tomato-based. They’re fresh (made in-house daily) and addictively delicious.

After the chips, we dove into the Campechana de Mariscos. This is a Mexican “cocktail” of spicy gulf shrimp, octopus, lump crab, avocado, and tostadas. Pretty solid.

The main event was incredible:

For the table, we got a triple stack of hotcakes. Once this arrived, we realized that we probably could have done a single pancake — they were each bigger than my head — but I didn’t complain. I’m not mad about having leftovers. The stack of hotcakes was delivered with a caramel syrup, which really set them apart from others I’ve had. They were fluffy. Crisp. And sweet. Mmmm.

I ordered the steak and eggs. The steak was a wood-grilled skirt steak and cooked to perfection at medium-rare. It was accompanied by two sunny side up eggs, Mexican butter, beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and tortillas. It was like a steak fajita with eggs. No complaints here.

My friend ordered the mixed fajitas. It was exactly the same as my dish, but the meat was half grilled chicken.

Another friend ordered the Huevos Rancheros. This dish featured crispy tostadas, beans, ranchero sauce, two eggs sunny side up, avocado, and bacon. It looked delicious. This one was a more reasonable portion size for one person.

What’s brunch without libations?

Saturday brunch should be enjoyed with a cocktail — or two — and Superica did not disappoint. I got the Matador, a pineapple margarita. And then I had another…

Overall, I was delighted with brunch at Superica. The service could have been a little more attentive, but I’m a-okay sacrificing a bit of attentiveness for everything they did right.
