Tacos Coranay

This taco truck may have me permanently breaking my rule of avoiding restaurants attached to standalone gas stations… Tacos Coranay is pretty darn good, even though the atmosphere is less than desirable.

Don’t get confused by the sign

Located just south of Charlotte in Fort Mill, SC at 9775 Charlotte Hwy, is a permanent fixture parked behind the Gulf gas station, a taco truck called Tacos Coranay. The sign says Tacos Nayarit, but the truck itself says Tacos Coronay – so don’t get confused – they’re the same.

Fuhgeddabout the bad experiences you’ve had eating at gas stations

If you’re like me, you’ve probably had awful experiences eating at gas stations (aside from rest stops). This one changes the game — IF you order the right things. You can either order the food to go or eat on picnic tables under a carport. I ate there so I could experience the food while it was fresh.

Fill ‘er up!

I ordered a ton of food: 3 tacos and a torta.

Tacos:

I ordered Pollo (chicken), Al Pastor (Pork), and Asada (Beef). They were street style, so they didn’t have any of the “American toppings” most people are used to seeing. I had mixed feelings about them.

The flour tortillas were delicious —they were not at all dried out like many tend to be.

The Al Pastor was excellent – succulent and flavorful. This will be my go-to moving forward.

The Pollo was good. Flavorful, albeit a little dry. It would have benefited from some lime juice, cheese, and or sour cream.

The Asada is what a friend recommended; however, I was not impressed – it was very dry and a bit chewy. I would not order the Asada again.

Torta:

The torta was my favorite. I ordered the Torta Milanese (Fried Chicken Sandwich).

They made it with soft bread that was perfectly toasted.

There was a crispy chicken cutlet, and it wasn’t dry at all.

It was topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and jalapeño. I'll be honest… it was kind of perfection. It will be very hard for me not to order this every time. I do want to try the quesadillas and burritos, so it will have to wait a couple of visits before I get it again.

It won’t break the bank

Oh! And the best part? It’s CHEAP. Tacos are $2 each. The torta was $7. Coke and Jarritos are $2. You can very comfortably fill up for $6-$10. That’s a win in my book!
