Fish Camp
My friend Rebecca introduced me to Fish Camp. It’s an excellent seafood restaurant in Sunset Beach. I’d describe it as your local family seafood restaurant – nice, yet super casual.
Fast-casual build-your-own style
You walk in and wait in line at the counter. There are usually 3-4 people waiting to order. The menu is located on large boards behind the counter. It’s a build-your-own style. They offer two types of chowder, several salads, and a range of small plates, like fried calamari and tuna poke. For the main affair, they usually offer ~15 types of seafood that you can order as a sandwich, salad, plate, or taco. It’s a pretty broad offering, in my opinion, ranging from wild Mahi to tuna to swordfish to scallops.
Reasonably priced deliciousness
You can’t go wrong with your custom creation at Fish Camp. Everything is excellent. I come about once a month and have never had a bad meal. It’s also SO reasonably priced. The tacos are <$6 each. Sandwiches and salads are typically around $14. Plates are typically ~$20 and come with rice and a side. You won’t leave hungry or broke!
A few of my faves
My favorite things are the fried calamari and the ono or mahi tacos (depending on my mood). I also love the scallop plate and salmon plate (offered grilled, BBQ, crusted, seared, or blackened). The fish and chips are a solid choice too. I surprisingly haven’t tried the chowder – but it always looks excellent.
Calamari. Tender with an excellent crispness. It’s served with two sauces, a dairy-based sauce, similar to a chipotle mayo, and a sweet chili sauce. Both are delicious, but the sweet chili is my favorite. It’s sugary with a slight heat behind it and a little acid.
Tacos. Because, well, tacos (insert heart emoji). They’re always super flavorful. I always add avocado. All of the ingredients always taste super fresh. The slaw adds a nice crunch and brightens them right up. The fish is always tender – especially the ono.
Overall – while nothing fancy – it’s a perfect casual dinner. It’s GREAT for groups too.
